Adaptive time-frequency approximations, implemented via the matching pursuit algorithm, o er description of local signals structures in terms of their time occurrence and width, frequency and amplitude. Explicit parameterization of the duration of detected structures for the rst time allows for a direct implementation of the classical de nition of sleep stages 3 and 4. Such procedure is compared to the visual scoring of these stages, but rst the proper methodology of comparing detection systems is brie y recalled and discussed. Apart from detection of deep sleep stages, new continuous descriptors of the sleep process are proposed within the same framework, preserving compatibility with the traditional visual analysis.
